Meet Your School Counsellor-Lisa Howard - Supporting Children’s Wellbeing at North Walkden
At North Walkden Primary School, we are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing and mental health of every child. We know that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and understood.
As your School Counsellor, I work alongside children, families, and staff to provide a caring, confidential, and supportive space where pupils can explore their feelings, build resilience, and develop the confidence they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
My aim is to help children understand that they are not alone, that their feelings matter, and that support is always available when they need it.
How I Can Help
Children may experience a range of feelings and challenges as they grow. Sometimes having someone to talk to can make a significant difference. Support is available for pupils who may be experiencing:
- Anxiety, stress, or worries
- Low confidence and self-esteem
- Friendship difficulties
- Family changes such as separation or bereavement
- Difficult emotions including sadness, anger, or confusion
What Support Is Available?
I work at North Walkden on a Wednesday and a Friday. I offer the following therapeutic support.
One-to-One Counselling
Some children benefit from regular individual sessions where they can explore their thoughts and feelings in a confidential, supportive environment.
Small Group Support
Targeted group sessions help children develop confidence, resilience, social skills, and strategies for managing challenges.
Drop-In Support
Children can self-refer and request a short session usually over lunchtime to discuss worries or concerns, providing early support when it is needed most. Children can come with a friend if that gives them the necessary confidence to talk about their worries.
What Children Say About Counselling
'I like talking to you (Lisa). If I want a problem fixing you will help me to solve it. But if I just want to talk I can and that is okay too.' Feedback from a child who accessed the drop-in service.
'It has been good to talk about my feelings. It helps to talk through things that have been going on that week.' Feedback from a child who accessed one-to-one.
'Thank you for working with X. I can already see a difference in her so I really appreciate all your help.' Feedback from a parent of a child who accessed one-to-one.
A Safe and Confidential Space

The counselling room provides a calm, nurturing space where children can:
- Talk openly about their worries
- Express feelings through play and creative activities
- Develop confidence and self-awareness
- Learn positive coping strategies
- Feel heard, valued, and understood
Confidentiality is respected wherever possible. However, if there are concerns regarding a child's safety or the safety of others, safeguarding procedures will always be followed.
