Each year, we teachers start out so hopeful and excited to begin the new journey with your child. We come in with hopes and dreams of what the year will be like - and all of those visions include good things for your child. Whilst we are willing to put in the effort, the hours, the creativity, the enthusiasm - having your support results in your child's overall success!

Autumn 1

Welcome to the start of what promises to be an amazing year! I hope you have all had a lovely Summer break and are rearing to go!

Have a read below to find out about our planned learning this term.

English

Our English learning this half term is heavily based on the text ‘Trash’ by Andy Mulligan.

The text is told by multiple narrators who each breathe fresh life into the tale as they take a turn to convey their story. It is a powerful story about unthinkable poverty - and the kind of hope and determination that can transcend it. With twists and turns, unrelenting action, and deep, raw emotion, ‘Trash’ is a heart-pounding, breath-holding novel, which provides us with ample opportunities to develop our writing skills in exciting and innovative ways!

Our writing will be strongly supported by ensuring we focus heavily on spelling, punctuation and grammar and weekly spelling tests, alongside discrete editing and proofing sessions will ensure we achieve our very best.

Guided Reading sessions will continue to take place daily. We ask that you continue to encourage your child to read at home and for you to comment in their Reading Record.

Maths

We begin our Autumn term exploring place value and number. Understanding the number system is necessary prerequisite knowledge for any number work.

Children will be working with numbers up to ten million, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding numbers to a required degree of accuracy and will use negative numbers in context.

Children will then move onto solving addition and subtraction multi-step problems in context, using formal written methods of long multiplication and division and identifying common factors, common multiples and prime numbers.

Topic – Children in World War II

- To find out what World War II was and where and when it took place.

- To find out about the Blitz.

- To learn about the effects of air raids and the causes of evacuation.

- To find out what rationing was.

- To learn about the experiences of Jewish children.

Science – Classifying Organisms

- Grouping organisms according to their characteristics.

- Distinguishing between organisms that have similar characteristics.

- To be able to classify plants according to their characteristics.
